One of the oldest hotels in Ireland, the Eccles Hotel
in Glengarrif has been visited by such Irish literary giants as W.B. Yeats
and George Bernard Shaw and boasts inspiring views across Bantry Bay and
out to Garinish Island.
The Eccles Hotel dates back to 1745 and blends its rich
history with old-fashioned charm and modern facilities. Nestled along
some of West Cork’s most scenic coastline and close to the rugged
mountains and Gaeltacht area of Gougane Barra and the moving Beara Peninsula
its small wonder that the Eccles has in the past drawn Ireland’s
literati. The Eccles has entertained Yeats, Thackery and George Bernard
Shaw, throughout its long history, a fact reflected in the rooms named
after these illustrious visitors to the area.
The bedrooms are spacious, typical of old buildings, while
furnishings are similarly typical of an old fashioned hotel and each room
is equipped with all the standard modern hotel facilities. The Eccles
Hotel has rooms that can adequately cater for families as well as rooms
suitable for disabled guests.
The hotel’s traditionally set restaurant is spacious
and offers excellent views out to Bantry Bay, while the bill of fare centres
on traditional Irish dishes, especially seafood drawing from the local
catch of the day. Less formal dining is available in the hotel bar, which
also provides popular weekend entertainment with live Irish music.
The scenery around the Eccles is very romantic, from taking
a cruise out to Garinish Island with its beautiful Italianate gardens
to walking around Gougane Barra and the picturesque church of St Finbar
beside the lake, or driving around the rugged mountains of the Beara Peninsula.
