Situated on the edge of Ardbear Bay just outside the town
of Clifden, the Ardagh is a refined, relaxing hotel and award-winning
restaurant set in the scenic heart of Connemara.
Flanked by the mountainous Twelve Pins of Connemara and
nestled at the head of a secluded bay, the Ardagh Hotel is set within
stunning scenery close to where the first transatlantic pilots Alcock
and Brown crash-landed their Vickers Vimy in Derrygimlagh Bog in 1919.
And the two men would have found the perfect place to relax and unwind
at the Ardagh, after their arduous flight over the Atlantic. The Ardagh
is a contemporary styled country hotel where roaring turf fires and plump
sofas await and the atmosphere is as laid back as the décor.
The Ardagh’s well-appointed bedrooms are all individually
decorated to very high standards set with sumptuous beds and fabulous
fittings together with all the necessary essentials. While the larger
of the suites also boast views overlooking the bay.
The Ardagh’s restaurant has earned the hotel a wide
reputation and a number of awards included the coveted three rosettes.
Overlooking the bay the restaurant specialises in locally caught seafood
and fresh homegrown vegetables with great attention to detail and presentation.
As well as fresh oysters and lobster, samples from the menu include; Fillet
of Turbot on Creamed Bay Spinach served with a Light Saffron Sauce and
Roast Rack of Lamb with a Reduction of Red Wine and Lamb Jus perfumed
with Rosemary and Thyme. All of which are complimented by an imaginative
wine list. Afterwards, the refined piano bar is the perfect place to relax
with after dinner coffees and liqueurs.
Connemara is great outdoors country and the Ardagh can
arrange activities such as sea angling, horse riding and golf at the renowned
18 hole championship links Connemara Golf Club in nearby Clifden.
